Theonios combines traditional Koroneiki olive cultivation with multispectral drone imaging, environmental monitoring, agronomic analysis and repeated field observation to understand how individual trees and different areas of our West Messinian estates respond throughout the growing season.
What Is Precision Agriculture in an Olive Grove?
Precision agriculture recognises something traditional farmers have understood intuitively for generations:
every part of the land is different.
Elevation, soil, orientation, sunlight, airflow, humidity and water availability can change considerably within the same olive grove.
Individual trees respond differently to those conditions.
Instead of treating hundreds of olive trees as one uniform agricultural surface, precision farming allows us to identify those variations, investigate them and make better-informed cultivation decisions.
How Does Theonios Use Multispectral Drones?
Theonios conducts repeated aerial surveys using multispectral drone technology.
Unlike conventional RGB photography, multispectral sensors record information across specific wavelengths, including areas of the spectrum invisible to the human eye.
We analyse vegetation indices including NDVI, NDRE, GNDVI, LCI and OSAVI to provide different perspectives on canopy vigour, chlorophyll activity and vegetation response.
The purpose is not to create colourful maps.
It is to identify meaningful change.
Why Compare NDVI and NDRE Over Time?
One multispectral image represents one moment.
Repeated measurements create intelligence.
By comparing the same olive trees and areas throughout the season, Theonios can observe changes in vegetation behaviour, identify anomalies and investigate areas showing different responses from the surrounding grove.
This temporal comparison is fundamental to our precision-agriculture programme.
It helps transform drone imagery from photography into an agricultural monitoring system.
From Multispectral Data to Agronomic Decisions
Drone data is never considered in isolation.
Aerial observations are combined with physical inspection of the trees and fruit, agronomic assessment, soil information, foliar analysis and meteorological and environmental data.
Together, these sources help us investigate questions concerning:
tree nutrition, water stress, canopy development, fruit condition, vegetation changes and potential biological or fungal pressure.
The philosophy is simple.

Researching Precision Olive Farming
Theonios also collaborates with the Smart Farming Technology Group of the Agricultural University of Athens in research exploring precision-agriculture technologies in olive cultivation.
The programme combines multispectral observations with environmental monitoring and field assessment, with particular interest in understanding tree physiology and conditions associated with biological and fungal stress.
One area of interest is olive anthracnose (Colletotrichum spp.), a disease capable of significantly affecting olive fruit and olive oil quality.
The research explores whether changes in vegetation and spectral behaviour can contribute to recognising potential stress before conventional symptoms become clearly visible.
Can Technology Replace the Farmer?
No.
And that is not our objective.
Technology cannot smell the grove after rain, touch an olive fruit, understand decades of experience with a particular hillside or replace the judgement developed by walking among the same trees throughout a season.
But it can reveal information the human eye cannot see.
